Tesco fined after customer fall

BY Matthew Ramsey

Tesco has been fined £730,000 after water leaking from refrigerator units caused an elderly man to slip and break his hip. Tesco failed either to cure the underlying blockage or effectively deal with the leak from refrigeration units over a period of 2 months.

Management failed to address the problem by turning off the unit or isolating the aisle and indeed potentially made the situation worse by putting cardboard over the areas of wet floor. The judge found Tesco highly culpable in that that there was a high likelihood of injury due to people slipping and the issues had been repeatedly reported but had not been dealt with adequately.
