The hurricane force winds which hit Scotland and northern England on Thursday 8 December left many businesses reeling with staff either unable to get to work, or having to leave early to get home.
With winter now upon us and further snow and high winds forecast, Law At Work has prepared a template policy which companies may find helpful in managing weather and transport disruption safely and efficiently.
It’s important to note that employers are responsible for staff safety while at work, and also have a duty to try to minimise risks to employee safety in respect of getting to and from their normal workplaces.
While common sense is useful when making decisions about how to deal with these issues, having a formal policy in place that sets out how the employer will normally approach dangerous weather conditions is by far the most effective way to put appropriate procedures in place.
