Government Consultation to Overhaul Food Allergen Labelling Laws

MR
Health & Safety

Continuing fatalities and public health effects have led the Government to seek views on non-regulatory and regulatory options for improving the allergen information on prepacked foods prepared on the premises where they are sold.

Food sold without packaging, prepared but not packaged, or food which is prepared and packaged after a customer request, is not included in this consultation.

Four options have been offered as part of the consultation exercise as follows:

  • Mandating full ingredient list labelling.
  • Mandating allergen-only labelling on food packaging.
  • Mandating ‘ask the staff’ labels on all products, with supporting information for consumers available in writing.
  • Promoting best practice around communicating allergen information to consumers.

It should be noted that until the UK leaves the EU it is restricted in the changes it can make to current legislation.

The consultation period is due to end on 29th March 2019.
