An employee from Brookville, Pennsylvania has made a fatal error by trying to get away with an unauthorised absence from work by pretending that his mother had died.

Scott Bennett’s grave scam was unearthed when he took the cover story to macabre lengths by placing an obituary for his mother in the local newspaper.

Mrs Bennett was mortified when she began to receive calls from friends and family offering condolences over her supposed demise. She uncovered the obituary and immediately rang the newspaper office to inform them that their report of her death was grossly exaggerated and she had not yet shuffled off to the great workplace in the sky.

Mr Bennett has been charged by the police with disorderly conduct. It is not known whether Mr Bennett remained with his employer or if he’s gone to a better place.
