Responses to a Department of Education request to state-funded or academy trust schools on their asbestos management arrangements has been a disappointing 77%.
Local authorities and academy trusts were asked to provide evidence that they have sought professional advice on asbestos that is in their school buildings and that an up to date action plan is in place and reviewed every two years.
The initial deadline for submitting evidence was 27th July 2018 and this has now been extended for a third time to 15th February 2019 with some MPs calling for those schools who have not responded to be named and shamed.
A useful asbestos checklist for schools is available on the HSE website at www.hse.gov.uk/services/education/asbestos-checklist.pdf.
