HSE’s provisional fatalities for the construction industry during the year to 1st April 2020 show an increase. Forty construction workers died, compared with thirty one during the previous year.
Compared with other industries fatalities in the Construction industry is around four times higher than any other industry.
The five-year average is confirmed at 37 annual deaths, which equals 1.74 per 100,000 workers compared to an UK average of 1.64 per 100,000.
Not one life should be lost at work, safety management controls when applied properly and constantly monitored must ensure everyone at work is able to do their job of work safely and return home to family and friends.
So what improvements are required? We are concerned at the budget reductions towards both the HSE Inspectors and Local Authority Environmental Health Officer. The days of real proactive inspections have gone.
The responsibility for safety sits more so with employers and in terms of Construction Safety, that perhaps still sits as to much a desktop exercise to achieve compliance with the Construction Design and Management Regulations as opposed to regular proactive site inspections with immediate “work stop” actions.
We have worked with construction firms who are totally committed to achieve zero harm incidents, however we see a number of construction sites where safety is clearly not on the radar v just get the job done. The only way to resolve this issue is more inspectors on the ground to raise awareness and force a culture change.
