Changes to the 18th edition wiring regulations

BSI has launched a summary of the changes that can be expected in the new 18th Edition BS 7671:2018 Requirements for Electrical Installations.

The new electrical standard will be issued on 2nd July, 2018.

The expected changes will cover:

  • Protection against overvoltages
  • Fire Protection
  • Changes to Section 753: The scope of Section 753 has been extended to apply to embedded electric heating systems for surface heating.
  • New section – energy efficiency

Electrical contractors and electricians will have a six month transition period to get up to speed with the changes.  From January 1,  2019, it will then be a requirement that all electrical installations designed after this date comply with BS 7671:2018, 18th Edition (2018).

The Regulations apply to the design, erection and verification of electrical installations, also additions and alterations to existing installations.

Existing installations that have been installed in accordance with earlier editions of the Regulations may not comply with this edition in every respect. This does not necessarily mean that they are unsafe for continued use or require upgrading.

We would advise our clients to check with their electrical contractors that they are working to or towards the new 18th edition as of July 2018.
