Asbestos at Work Approved Code of Practice Updated

DC

Health & Safety

The two current Approved Codes of Practices for Asbestos (L127 The Management of Asbestos in non-domestic premises) and L143 (Work with materials containing asbestos) have been consolidated into a new approved code of practice by the HSE.

The new document provides guidance for employers about work which disturbs, or is likely to disturb asbestos, asbestos sampling and laboratory analysis and practical guidance on how to comply with the Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations.

The regulations came into force on 6th April 2012 and give minimum standards for protecting employees from risks associated with exposure to asbestos.  Past exposures to asbestos at work result in approximately 2500 deaths per annum in the UK.

A copy of the Approved Code of Practice can be downloaded from the HSE website at http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/books/l143.htm
