Margaret Anne Clark

Head of Employment Law | Glasgow
Qualified since 2003, Margaret Anne is a highly skilled solicitor who gets the job done with a minimum of fuss. As Head of Employment Law, she advises clients on all aspects of employment law; with particular expertise in discrimination, equal pay and equality matters. She also has extensive experience of advising on redundancies, business reorganisations and TUPE. Her unwillingness to speak Latin, and her reluctance to write ten page letters, role models the pragmatic and practical approach that LAW exemplifies. Margaret Anne is also a tutor in the Diploma in Legal Practice at the University of Strathclyde.

Daniel Gorry

Deputy Head of Employment Law | Glasgow
After a spell flirting with the music industry and playing at T in the Park, Daniel traded in his guitar for a career in employment law with Law At Work. Since qualifying as a solicitor in 2006, Daniel has channelled his creative talents into advising clients on all aspects of employment law. Daniel has been on tour at a number of employment tribunals dealing with cases on unfair dismissal, discrimination and TUPE. From his involvement in complex company restructures, Daniel has developed an in depth knowledge of the education and leisure sectors.

Heather Maclean

Senior Associate (Knowledge Development) | Glasgow
Heather graduated from Strathclyde University where she gained a First Class Honours LLB degree and completed the Diploma in Legal Practice, also at Strathclyde. She specialised in employment law at the outset of her career, and has particular expertise in TUPE and data protection. She previously worked at the University of Strathclyde Law Clinic as a Supervising Solicitor, and continues to support the charity’s work as a member of its Supervisory Committee. Regularly approached to comment on employment law matters on radio and in print, Heather believes in getting right to the heart of the matter and advises in a practical, straightforward way.

Gerard O'Hare

Senior Associate Employment Solicitor | Edinburgh
Gerry completed an M.A. before setting off travelling to find his calling in life which turned out to be a love of photography. In order to fund this expensive hobby Gerry returned to university to study law and, following his traineeship, joined the LAW team in 2009. His people and analytical skills work well in the world of employment law, and Law At Work's innovative business model allows him to build strong relationships with his clients and provide them with high quality, practical, hands-on advice. Gerry specialises in reorganisations, workplace policies, contracts and contentious matters.

Paman Singh

Associate Principal Litigation Solicitor | Glasgow
Paman joined the team in 2015 and has recently moved into the role of Principal Litigation Solicitor taking responsibility for overseeing the team’s Employment Tribunal workload as well as looking after a number of LAW’s clients. Paman has a particular interest and expertise in litigation and has successfully represented clients in tribunal hearings across the UK in a wide variety of claims including discrimination, whistleblowing and unfair dismissal. With an honours degree and masters in law to his name, Paman also tutors on the University of Strathclyde Diploma in Legal Practice.

Lesley Rennie

Senior Employment Solicitor | Aberdeen
Lesley gained her LLB (Hons) and Diploma in Legal Practice from the University of Aberdeen, qualifiying as a solicitor in May 2011. During her legal traineeship, Lesley developed an early interest in employment law and continued to specialise in this upon qualification. Lesley trained and spent her first years post qualification at a well-regarded Aberdeen firm, with her work being primarily employer led with a focus on offshore oil and gas and marine clients enabling her to gain considerable experience in dealing with jurisdictional, marine and expatriate employment issues. Lesley thereafter moved to Law at Work Empire in the Summer of 2013. With experience across a wealth of sectors, including retail, oil and gas, marine, care, construction and agriculture and a keen eye for detail, Lesley provides strategic and pragmatic advice on a breadth of employment law matters including niche areas such as employment status, restrictive covenant agreements, employee data protection issues and the employment law considerations in mergers and acquisitions.

Kirstie Beattie

Senior Employment Solicitor | Glasgow
Kirstie had a keen interest in employment law from early on in her degree and attended LAW as a work experience student whilst at university. After graduating with a first class Honours and writing a dissertation on Shared Parental Leave, Kirstie officially joined LAW as a trainee solicitor back in 2015. During her traineeship Kirstie gained a wealth of experience in dealing with clients across various sectors and was responsible for a number of tribunals involving unfair dismissal, race discrimination and TUPE. Kirstie stuck around after her traineeship and has developed a keen interest in large-scale transactions involving TUPE and collective consultation, as well as complex discrimination cases. In August 2019 Kirstie was promoted to the role of Senior Employment Solicitor to reflect her contribution to the team so far.

Sophie Macphail

Senior Employment Solicitor | Edinburgh
Following the completion of an MA in history, Sophie took her keen interest of problem solving and analysing evidence to the study of law and completed her LLB at the University of Glasgow in 2009.  After spending some time travelling and working for a human rights charity, she returned to Scotland to undergo her legal traineeship at a national law firm in 2012, qualifying in 2014. Sophie joined LAW in 2016 having gained experience of working with a wide variety of clients including large corporations, small business, charities, housing associations and individuals. She has a keen interest in disciplinary issues, business re-organisations and absence management.

Ed McFarlane

Litigator | Gateshead
Ed has over 14 years’ experience in employment tribunal representation, and has previously worked for an employers’ association representing employers during negotiations with trade unions. He has also appeared in the Employment Appeal Tribunal arguing the law before High Court judges. Prior to studying law, he was a geneticist, and outside of work he’s an outdoorsman, enjoying country walks, kayaking and observing wildlife.

Samantha Mackie

Employment Solicitor | Edinburgh
Sammi is an employment solicitor based in our Edinburgh office. She completed both her LLB and Diploma in Professional Legal Practice at the University of Edinburgh. Sammi's client portfolio includes employers operating in public services, agricultural, corporate and the hospitality sector. She provides support on all aspects of employment law through our advisory service and also in employment tribunal matters. Sammi is passionate about understanding our client's business to assist in reaching outcomes that accomodate their ways of working.Having completed her traineeship in Immigration Law, Sammi also supports LAW's clients with Right to Work and Sponsorship queries. Sammi often speaks at our Employment Law updates, delivers client training and is a member of our Corporate Responsibilty team. Her legal interests ouside of LAW include volunteering at the University of Edinburgh and Strathclyde's free legal advice services. In her free time Sammi is a fitness instructor and enjoys travelling.

Ben Brown

Employment Solicitor | Glasgow
Ben completed his undergraduate degree and Diploma in Legal Practice at the University of Strathclyde. Alongside many other LAW colleagues, whilst completing his degree he volunteered at the Strathclyde Law Clinic assisting and representing on various issues, including at Employment Tribunals. Ben commenced his traineeship with LAW in 2018 and qualified in 2020. He has become a mainstay of the team and uses his skills to advise clients on complex matters as well as appearing in the Employment Tribunals throughout the U.K. Ben also has a passion for music playing a variety of instruments alongside being an active member in the Young Farmers movement.

Scott O'Connor

Employment Solicitor | Glasgow
Scott traded in his tools and overalls for books and suits when he embarked upon a career change from engineering to law. He studied his undergraduate degree and Diploma in Professional Legal Practice at the University of Strathclyde. During his time at university he volunteered at the University of Strathclyde Law Clinic and represented clients on various legal issues. Like most of the team, Scott joined LAW as a trainee and qualified in 2020. Keen to get to the heart of the matter, he has developed his skills to provide clients with practical, commercial advice on complex employment issues. He has also represented clients in the Employment Tribunal across the U.K. Outside of work, Scott can usually be found on a football pitch either coaching or supporting his three football daft sons playing with their respective teams.

Jenny Brunton

Employment Solicitor | Edinburgh
Jenny completed her LLB at the University of Aberdeen and went on to complete her DPLP at the University of Glasgow. Jenny spent the first year of her traineeship with the Society of Writers to Her Majesty’s Signet, where she worked closely with a suite of charity clients advising on governance issues and succession planning. Jenny came to LAW with a keen interest in Employment Law. Throughout university Jenny volunteered for the CAB and Shelter Scotland. Jenny continues to pursue her interest in the third sector, as a member of children’s charity Trefoil House and Disability Snow Sport UK.

Kenzie Howard

Trainee Employment Solicitor | Edinburgh
Kenzie obtained her LLB and Diploma in Professional Legal Practice from the University of Edinburgh. During her time at university, she volunteered for the Scottish Child Law Centre and Citizens Advice Bureau before settling on employment law as an area of interest. Kenzie worked as a Student Advisor for the University of Edinburgh Free Legal Advice Centre, where she provided legal advice to members of the Edinburgh community on a variety of issues and disputes. She has an interest in ADR and mediation. As a trainee solicitor, Kenzie is keen to learn more about employment law in an everyday context. She is looking forward to delivering practical and useful advice to LAW’s clients.

Erin Moncur

Trainee Employment Solicitor | Glasgow
Erin completed her LLB and DPLP at the University of Glasgow. Prior to completing her DPLP, Erin took two years out to travel around South East Asia, China and Australia and obtained an LLM in Criminal Justice at the University of Strathclyde. During her studies, Erin volunteered for Rape Crisis Scotland and the Citizens Advice Bureau where she gained valuable experience in dealing empathetically with complex issues. Erin developed a keen interest in Employment Law throughout University, particularly in the area of discrimination. As a trainee solicitor she is looking forward to getting to know LAW’s clients and to utilise the knowledge she has gained throughout her studies to advise clients on their employment issues.

Lorna Gemmell

EL & HR Training Manager | Glasgow
Some trainers have a flare for delivery; others have the technical knowledge to ensure that the important messages delivered are completely accurate. Over a decade of hands-on advisory and tribunal experience as a qualified employment lawyer coupled with more than five years’ experience as a dedicated trainer means that Lorna is able to deliver both. Lorna plans and delivers our popular programme of public training events ranging from our bi-annual free employment law updates through to special events and conferences. Lorna also works with organisations to prepare and deliver bespoke and engaging in-house management training programmes tailored to meet the organisation’s objectives. Lorna is frequently complimented for her engaging and informal delivery style and her ability to respond quickly and accurately to delegate questions. Lorna is curious by nature and enjoys getting to know the people and organisations that she works with.
