Magnus Swanson
Executive Chairman
Magnus is the former Chief Executive of a major corporate law firm. Before that he had an impressive track record in leveraged mergers and acquisitions - particularly MBO and institutional buy-outs. He has served on the Board of Law At Work since the company was established, and is now Executive Chairman following our MBO in 2012.
Donald MacKinnon
Group Legal Director
Donald’s 20 year career in law has included him working for a community law centre, a bank and one of Scotland’s largest commercial law firms. He joined LAW in 2001, and leads the employment law team. Accredited by the Law Society of Scotland since 2005 as a specialist in employment law, Donald has vast experience in all areas of employment practice. As well as being a board director, Donald maintains his own portfolio of clients, and continues to appear before employment tribunals and the EAT. Donald is a go-to contributor for press, radio and TV on all matters relating to employment law.
Steve Cook
Group Managing Director
Steve is LAW Group MD, and formerly Chief Executive of Empire, which was acquired by LAW in 2018. Empire had grown to become one of the largest independent employment law, HR and safety consultancies in Scotland. Steve is active within the Aberdeen business community and has been Chairman of Elevator, a social enterprise, since 2002. Elevator delivers Business Gateway services in the Grampian and Tayside regions, helping thousands of new businesses start each year.
PJ Chalmers
Group Operations Director
Having worked in the regulatory compliance sector for over 20 years, primarily specialising in employment law and HR, PJ has vast experience of supporting clients on operational and strategic people management issues. In the past, PJ acted as technical consultant for a major player in the compliance sector before helping found Empire, which was acquired by LAW in 2018. Now Group Operations Director for LAW, PJ has responsibility for developing the Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality (HSEQ) services within the group.
Margaret Anne Clark
Head of Employment Law
Qualified since 2003, Margaret Anne is a highly skilled solicitor who gets the job done with a minimum of fuss. As Head of Employment Law, she advises clients on all aspects of employment law; with particular expertise in discrimination, equal pay and equality matters. She also has extensive experience of advising on redundancies, business reorganisations and TUPE. Her unwillingness to speak Latin, and her reluctance to write ten page letters, role models the pragmatic and practical approach that LAW exemplifies. Margaret Anne is also a tutor in the Diploma in Legal Practice at the University of Strathclyde.
Donna Gibb
Head of Client Services (Aberdeen)
Having joined the company in 2005, Donna was a Director of Empire prior to the acquisition by LAW in 2018. Donna has helped develop and lead the growth of all service lines and has over 20 years’ experience of advising and guiding clients on all HR and employment law matters. Accustomed to leading the design, development and implementation of appropriate people strategies, policies and procedures within the framework of the relevant business context, she is an experienced Consultant who has applied her 20 years’ experience and knowledge to the design and delivery of our Advisory and Consultancy Services.
Daniel Gorry
Deputy Head of Employment Law
After a spell flirting with the music industry and playing at T in the Park, Daniel traded in his guitar for a career in employment law with Law At Work. Since qualifying as a solicitor in 2006, Daniel has channelled his creative talents into advising clients on all aspects of employment law. Daniel has been on tour at a number of employment tribunals dealing with cases on unfair dismissal, discrimination and TUPE. From his involvement in complex company restructures, Daniel has developed an in depth knowledge of the education and leisure sectors.
Gerard O'Hare
Senior Associate Employment Solicitor
Gerry completed an M.A. before setting off travelling to find his calling in life which turned out to be a love of photography. In order to fund this expensive hobby Gerry returned to university to study law and, following his traineeship, joined the LAW team in 2009. His people and analytical skills work well in the world of employment law, and Law At Work's innovative business model allows him to build strong relationships with his clients and provide them with high quality, practical, hands-on advice. Gerry specialises in reorganisations, workplace policies, contracts and contentious matters.
Susie Lockhart
Senior Employment Solicitor
Susie started her career working in finance using her French language skills. She went on to do a law degree and completed her traineeship in a commercial firm working between the Glasgow/ Edinburgh Offices. Having moved to Aberdeen in 2008 she specialised in Employment Law and has worked with a diverse range of clients which has enable her to gain experience in all areas of employment law including TUPE and complex discrimination claims. She enjoys working with clients to find a solution that works for them.
Lesley Rennie
Senior Employment Solicitor
Lesley gained her LLB (Hons) and Diploma in Legal Practice from the University of Aberdeen, qualifiying as a solicitor in May 2011. During her legal traineeship, Lesley developed an early interest in employment law and continued to specialise in this upon qualification. Lesley trained and spent her first years post qualification at a well-regarded Aberdeen firm, with her work being primarily employer led with a focus on offshore oil and gas and marine clients enabling her to gain considerable experience in dealing with jurisdictional, marine and expatriate employment issues. Lesley thereafter moved to Law at Work Empire in the Summer of 2013. With experience across a wealth of sectors, including retail, oil and gas, marine, care, construction and agriculture and a keen eye for detail, Lesley provides strategic and pragmatic advice on a breadth of employment law matters including niche areas such as employment status, restrictive covenant agreements, employee data protection issues and the employment law considerations in mergers and acquisitions.

Following the completion of an MA in history, Sophie took her keen interest of problem solving and analysing evidence to the study of law and completed her LLB at the University of Glasgow in 2009.  After spending some time travelling and working for a human rights charity, she returned to Scotland to undergo her legal traineeship at a national law firm in 2012, qualifying in 2014. Sophie joined LAW in 2016 having gained experience of working with a wide variety of clients including large corporations, small business, charities, housing associations and individuals. She has a keen interest in disciplinary issues, business re-organisations and absence management.
Heather Maclean
Associate Employment Solicitor
Heather graduated from Strathclyde University where she gained a First Class Honours LLB degree and completed the Diploma in Legal Practice, also at Strathclyde. She specialised in employment law at the outset of her career, and has particular expertise in TUPE and data protection. She previously worked at the University of Strathclyde Law Clinic as a Supervising Solicitor, and continues to support the charity’s work as a member of its Supervisory Committee. Regularly approached to comment on employment law matters on radio and in print, Heather believes in getting right to the heart of the matter and advises in a practical, straightforward way.
Kirstie Beattie

Kirstie had a keen interest in employment law from early on in her degree and attended LAW regularly as a work experience student whilst at university. After graduating with a first class Honours and writing a dissertation on Shared Parental Leave, Kirstie officially joined LAW as a trainee solicitor back in 2015. During her traineeship Kirstie gained a wealth of experience in dealing with clients across various sectors and was responsible for appearing in a number of tribunals involving unfair dismissal, race discrimination and TUPE to name but a few. Kirstie stuck around after her traineeship and has developed a keen interest in large-scale transactions involving TUPE and collective consultation, as well as complex discrimination cases. Many of you will recognise Kirstie as a regular presenter at our bi-annual Employment Law Updates as well as other public training events. In August 2019 Kirstie was promoted to the role of Senior Employment Solicitor to reflect her contribution to the team so far.
Paman Singh
Employment Solicitor
Following completion of his undergraduate degree alongside LAW’s Heather Kemmett, Paman worked with NGOs in London and New York, then decided to take the next logical step for a law graduate and become a builder. To keep his legal skills honed, he gained a Masters in Human Rights Law from Strathclyde University, which he combined with tutoring at the same institution. After establishing a small business and having dealt with employees at all levels, Paman felt the irresistible draw of law and completed his Diploma in Legal Practice. His experience enables him to appreciate the specific needs of a business.
Miranda Hughes
Trainee Employment Solicitor
Miranda studied Politics and Philosophy in Brighton before moving to Glasgow to complete her LLB and Diploma in Legal Practice at the University of Strathclyde. Whilst volunteering at the Strathclyde Law Clinic she discovered her passion for Employment Law, gaining experience in both advising and representing clients. During her Diploma year, Miranda completed a Work Based Learning module at LAW, attracted by the company’s unique approach. As a trainee she is eager to help build on the success of the company and to get to know the variety of clients that LAW advises.
Hannah Lynn
Trainee Employment Solicitor
After completing her LLB at the University of Edinburgh, Hannah spent some time travelling and trying to master the French language. After this she started her Diploma in Legal Practice, at the same institution. During this time she spent time working for the Free Legal Advice Centre where she developed her interest in employment law. Hannah is delighted to join LAW and is excited about the company’s unique traineeship programme and working with its diverse client base.
Scott O'Connor
Trainee Employment Solicitor
Prior to a career in law, Scott served an apprenticeship and worked as a service engineer for a compressed air company. He completed a part-time pre entry course at the University of Strathclyde and subsequently studied his degree and diploma at the same institution. Like some of his LAW colleagues, Scott volunteered at the University of Strathclyde Law Clinic dealing with a variety of issues and also represented clients in the Employment Tribunal and Small Claims Court. Determined to do the best for clients, Scott is keen to develop his knowledge of employment law to assist and advise LAW’s varied client base.
Ben Brown
Trainee Employment Solicitor
Ben completed his undergraduate degree and Diploma in Legal Practice at the University of Strathclyde. Alongside fellow trainee Scott and other LAW colleagues, whilst completing his degree Ben volunteered at the Strathclyde Law Clinic assisting and representing on various issues including at Employment Tribunals. Ben also has a passion for music playing a variety of instruments alongside being an active member in the Young Farmers movement. As a trainee Ben is keen to understand the intricacies of employment law in professional practise and further the success of the company for years to come.
Lorna Gemmell
EL & HR Training Manager
Some trainers have a flare for delivery; others have the technical knowledge to ensure that the important messages delivered are completely accurate. Over a decade of hands-on advisory and tribunal experience as a qualified employment lawyer coupled with more than five years’ experience as a dedicated trainer means that Lorna is able to deliver both. Lorna plans and delivers our popular programme of public training events ranging from our bi-annual free employment law updates through to special events and conferences. Lorna also works with organisations to prepare and deliver bespoke and engaging in-house management training programmes tailored to meet the organisation’s objectives. Lorna is frequently complimented for her engaging and informal delivery style and her ability to respond quickly and accurately to delegate questions. Lorna is curious by nature and enjoys getting to know the people and organisations that she works with. Roz Wood - Law at Work
Roz Wood
Head of HR Consultancy
Roz heads up the HR consultancy team at LAW. She has more than 30 years’ experience working as a generalist HR professional, including six years as HR Director for a large well-known London retail group. Roz has been responsible for managing the HR aspect of MBOs; company flotation on the stock market; new store openings; HR strategy; devising and implementing reward and remuneration strategies; changing management programmes; staff re-profiling; performance management and succession planning. Roz was a founding director of Square Circle HR where she was involved in all aspects of the business, giving her a keen insight for challenges facing companies today.
Catherine Wilson
HR Service Manager
Catherine manages the HR team in Aberdeen. She graduated in Business Studies and after a varied career working in retail, publishing and small business advice, made the decision to move into law. She completed her Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice in 2006 and after a period working as the Employment Specialist for the local CAB, in 2008 joined Empire (acquired by LAW in 2018). Catherine has a wealth of experience working with a wide variety of clients in a range of sectors and advising on the full range of employment law issues. Catherine’s diverse background allows her to think commercially and come up with practical solutions for clients. She has a particular interest in disciplinary, grievance and medical capability cases, and previously trained in mediation.
Jill Hosie

Jill began her career using her qualifications in Art & Design to work as a Window Display Artist and Graphic Designer and then somehow moved on to work in HR managerial roles in the private sector for a period of 14 years, and for a short time period of time, ran her own consultancy company before joining Empire HR as an in-house Consultant supporting clients externally. After a career break of 10 years, Jill rejoined the company in her current role in October 2011. She is a Chartered Member of the CIPD with lots of commercial experience and in handling complex employment relation issues. Jill carries out a diverse range of activities within the challenges of HR and enjoys the variety of working with both small and larger clients, tailoring the advice to suit. Consultancy projects currently include the in-house support of one of our clients, working in house one day per week for the past four years, during this time becoming part of their in-house team.

Caroline is a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD and has over 20 years’ experience as a qualified HR and employment law expert. She has extensive experience from working as a recruitment consultant, through to specialist HR roles in organisations as diverse as retail, the BBC and Glasgow School of Art. She has also spent time working for a national HR and employment law provider. Her expertise includes the facilitated delivery of numerous change projects and large scale re-organisations including job evaluation and re-grading for a range of clients. Caroline enjoys working in close partnership with a diverse client base to provide commercially-focused strategic HR support.

With more than 25 years of experience in employment law and HR consultancy, and with a passion for employee relations, Mary has a wealth of expertise across many industry sectors, including insurance and banking. She graduated from Glasgow Caledonian University with a PgDip in HR Management and she is a Chartered Member of CIPD. Mary takes a strategic approach to provide solutions; her recent projects include recruitment; employment documentation; job evaluation; managing performance; restructuring; redundancy, disciplinary, grievance, conflict resolution; absence management, pay benchmarking; management training and coaching.

Lilias moved into consultancy after 20 years working in HR managerial roles in the private sector, including several years in senior HR at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre. She’s a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD and has a paralegal qualification in employment law from the University of Strathclyde, which means she’s ideally placed to handle complex employment relations issues. Lilias enjoys the diverse range of activities working in a consultancy; some of her projects have included recruitment and retention; training & development; coaching; policy development and harmonising terms and conditions of employment.
Vicky Johnson

Vicky is a Chartered Member of the CIPD with more than 15 years of HR and employment law experience. Vicky has been involved in working within various industries including the oil & gas and construction sectors. Vicky has worked with the Company for the last eleven years and has supported a number of clients through difficult reorganisations, redundancies, disciplinaries and grievance issues, both in an Advisory and consultancy capacity, and has also supported clients onsite on an ongoing basis. She has a proven track record in employment law, interpreting legislation and delivering best practice solutions with commercial awareness to employment issues.
Pamela Williams

Pamela completed a degree in Business Law before going on to complete her LLB and Diploma in Legal Practice. While studying in Glasgow Pamela volunteered with Citizens Advice Bureau and gained employment law/tribunal experience from the claimants’ perspective. Completing her traineeship with a legal firm based in Fife, she acquired considerable experience in Mental Health law before joining Empire’s Aberdeen office in 2012. She relocated to our Inverness office in 2015. Pamela has a range of experience in all aspects of employment law, including data protection law. She provides on-site support and HR training for clients in the Highlands. Pamela enjoys strategising to identify innovative and pragmatic solutions for her clients. She regularly writes HR and employment law articles, including her monthly ‘Staff Matters’ newspaper column, which is published across the Highlands.
Courtney Allan

Courtney has an MSc in Human Resources Management from Robert Gordon University, following an undergraduate degree in Management with Human Resources. She has more than 5 years’ experience in human resources working within the Oil and Gas industry, her experience includes but not limited to, redundancy, TUPE, absence management, Disciplinary and Grievance matters, as well as being commercially aware. Courtney enjoys the diversity of the work that the LAW provides, and enjoys working with the variety of clients, to understand their organisations to allow her to provide support with all HR related matters.
Louise Irwin
Senior Employment Solicitor
Louise completed her LLB in Law with Options in Economics and Legal Diploma at Aberdeen University and then later returned to Robert Gordons to complete a Masters in Employment Law with her dissertation focused on IR35. Louise has a particular interest in non-contentious employment law and has a passion for the law relating to employee status. Louise qualified in 2004, and apart from taking a year out to travel to South America, has worked in employment law ever since.

A Chartered Member of the CIPD, with a Postgraduate Diploma in HR Management, Laura has 15 years’ experience in employment law and HR working with a range of clients in the public and private sector. Laura provides advice on all areas of HR and employment law including commercial solutions to work based problems. Laura enjoys the variety of working in a consultancy role.
Judith Byers
Senior HR Consultant
Judith graduated from Edinburgh University with a BSc in Social Administration and she is a Chartered Member of CIPD. With more than 25 years of experience in employment law and HR consultancy in the retail and oil and gas industry sectors Judith joined the company 6 years ago. Throughout her career she has covered every aspect of the HR function from recruitment, training, auditing, employee relations, union negotiations, through to strategic policy formulation, compensation and benefits. Judith takes a pragmatic approach to providing solutions; her recent experience has focused on contractual documentation mixed with solving issues around employee relations, grievance and disciplinary problems, as well as company re-structuring and redundancies. Judith also enjoys delivering training and devising bespoke training to address client needs.
Katy Marshall

Katy joined LAW in 2007 with an LLB from Glasgow University and a background in management. She worked initially in our legal team, managing a portfolio of clients, including appearing in the employment tribunal. With her considerable experience, Katy moved to our HR consultancy team in 2015 and has a portfolio of HR Consultancy clients. She also delivers a variety of HR projects for our clients including; large scale reorganisations and redundancies, collective consultations and TUPE transfers; support with grievance and disciplinary investigations; designing performance management systems and high profile executive recruitment campaigns. Katy has particular experience in the area of reward and recognition and leads this area of work at LAW. Katy has completed the Post Graduate Diploma in HR Management at Strathclyde University and is a member of the CIPD.
Sallyanne Williamson

Sallyanne has over 20 years’ experience working as an HR generalist and has gained her diverse range of experience across various industry sectors. Sallyanne graduated from London South Bank University with a BA honours degree and went on to achieve her post graduate HRM qualification from Robert Gordons University, she has been a chartered member of the CIPD for over 20 years. Sallyanne has been with the Company for over seven years and provides HR solution-based advice to her clients and supports several clients with weekly on site, HR management support. Sallyanne has delivered consultancy support for clients on, harmonising terms and conditions, TUPE consultation, performance management, redundancy, re-organisation, employee relation matters, disciplinary and grievance, HR audits Sallyanne particularly enjoys the close relationship built up with her clients which allows her to tailor her advice to their specific business requirements.
Lynn Lavelle

Lynn Lavelle studied for her LLM in Employment Law and Practice at Robert Gordon University while working full time and is a CIPD Fellow. She has more than 25 years’ experience in employment law and HR; 15 of those years specialising in HR Consultancy supporting organisations across a whole range of sectors. Her experience includes redundancy, TUPE, absence management, disciplinary and grievance procedures, working time, preparing settlement agreements and ACAS early conciliation. Lynn enjoys the variety of work that a consultancy role brings, and was drawn to LAW’s close relationships with our clients as it allows her a deeper understanding of the organisations she partners.
Robyn O'Donoghue
HR Consultant
Robyn is a Chartered Member of the CIPD, with over 8 years of generalist HR experience. Graduating from the University of Aberdeen with a Masters Degree in Management Studies, and further completing a Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management, her technical experience is coupled with a strong academic understanding in HR and Employment Law. With a background in the Hospitality Sector before joining LAW, she has enjoyed diverse exposure to a wide range of HR practices. This has included, but not limited to; disciplinary, grievance, redundancy, TUPE and performance management. Robyn prides herself on being able to balance the necessity of HR with the requirements of a business, to ensure that the advice given is always commercially aware and tailored to each individual client.
Laura Mackay

Laura studied at Strathclyde Business School where she achieved a First Class Honours Degree in Human Resource Management. In her third year of University, Laura completed an internship and summer placement as a HR and Marketing Assistant with Square Circle HR Ltd. After working in the automotive industry as a HR Assistant for over a year, Laura joined LAW as a HR Advisor to continue her career as a HR professional. Laura continues to build her client portfolio and has experience in a wide variety of employee relations issues. She continues to gain extensive knowledge and experience in the field of HR consultancy.
Linda Clarkson
Senior HR Consultant
Linda is an Associate Member of the CIPD with a Postgraduate Diploma in HRM and has over 15 years experience in dealing with HR and Employment Law matters in private companies, including spells working in the oil industry. Linda has experience in a wide range of topics including disciplinary, grievance, redundancy, consulting in changes to terms and conditions, performance and absence issues. She enjoys the diverse nature of the role and that you never know what each day will bring….
Matthew Hutchison

Matthew completed his MA in Politics and International Relations at the University of Aberdeen. After a year travelling he undertook an MSc in Human Resource Management at the Robert Gordon University before starting at Empire. Through his experience advising clients on a range of issues he has developed an appetite for employee relations and is currently studying a Masters in Employment Law at the University of Leicester. Out with work he is an avid sports fan and can regularly spends weekends watching and playing numerous sports including football, rugby, cricket, tennis and golf around the country.

Douglas started his career as an Environmental Health Officer enforcing food and safety legislation. He then joined the Health and Safety Executive, as the first EHO seconded for his expertise in the catering and food manufacturing industries. After leaving HSE, Douglas worked large FTSE companies as Head of Safety both in the UK and internationally including care homes, hotels, student accommodation, events, logistics, distribution, retail and leisure. A Chartered Member of IOSH, he specialises in auditing, creating best work practices, client specific project work, training and coaching for workplace safety, fire prevention, food safety, security and environmental management. Douglas joined LAW as Head of Health & Safety in 2015.
Lee Craig - Law at Work
Lee Craig
Health & Safety Manager
Lee worked in local government in the Civil Contingency Planning field before moving into health and safety in 2003. In her safety role, she was responsible for developing, implementing and delivering health and safety policies - including consultation with trade union representatives. Lee moved to consultancy in 2012, where she supported a portfolio of clients in retail, care, warehousing, hospitality and leisure. A Chartered Member of IOSH with a PgC in Safety and Risk Management, she has a wealth of experience including crisis management and business continuity; corporate risk management; construction, work related stress, lone working; violence at work and asbestos management.
Matthew Ramsey
Health & Safety Manager
Matthew joined LAW in 2016, after eight years as an inspector with the Health and Safety Executive in Scotland. Given his broad remit within the HSE, Matthew has a breadth and depth of experience across most industries and situations, including construction and the control of major accident hazards. Matthew was attracted to LAW’s proactive and supportive approach to health & safety, and the quality of our service compared to off the shelf solutions which he experienced during his time with the HSE. As a Chartered Member of IOSH, he brings valuable enforcement insight to our clients and the LAW team.
Sarah Liversidge
Health & Safety Manager
Sarah worked within the transport industry before joining HSE as a Regulatory Inspector in 2010. She joins LAW in 2019 with extensive experience of applying health and safety legislation within industries including Engineering, Woodworking, Construction, Manufacturing, Social and Health Care Services. Sarah was attracted by the supportive approach of LAW and the tailored service offered to its clients, compared with generic solutions often offered by its competitors. Along with her broad range of experience and enforcement insight, Sarah brings with her a proactive, pragmatic approach to the management of health and safety.
Steven A Smith
Head of Client Management
Steven has a joint honours degree in marketing and economics from Strathclyde Business School, having completed his BA at Arizona State University in Phoenix. He also returned to the books in 2013 to earn a Masters in Employment Law from RGU. With experience of working with digital marketing agencies in the UK and US, Steven joined LAW in 2010 as our first business development graduate. His team is responsible for LAW's growth, including all areas of our marketing, business development and client care.
Zoe Mackenzie - Law at Work

Zoe joined the LAW team in 2016 looking for a new challenge. She completed her honours degree in Costume Design and Construction in 2010, during which she delighted in the amazing world of theatre and the world behind the curtain. After graduation, a move into high-end retail gained her valuable management experience and insight into the rigorous demands of excellent customer service. Zoe works closely with our service delivery team to continually enhance our service, and is a key point of contact for all of our clients.
Pamela Keith
Client Care Manager
Prior to joining the team in 2015, Pamela enjoyed 25 years in the retail sector in operational management at senior executive and director level. Her breadth of experience has equipped her with a strong understanding of business challenges, enabling her to provide support and add significant value to LAW’s client relationships. As a former client of LAW, Pamela also has a unique appreciation of customer requirements and expectations!
Suzanne Blair - Law at Work

Suzanne joined LAW in early 2016 when she moved back home to Scotland, having lived in England for 20 years. With a strong background in sales and customer relations, she’s worked for a variety of different businesses – from hospitality and leisure venues, to insurance providers and global brands such as Coca-Cola. Her experience has given her an expert insight into how different companies are run and organised. Lauren joined LAW in May 2018 with a fresh eye on client management and the sales process.  Having over a decade of experience within financial services, and several years within recruitment, Lauren is passionate about introducing LAW to future clients.  Lauren offers a consultative approach, ensuring that the proposals she develops are bang in line with requirements and that expectations are met from the very first meeting.

Varri has over 18 years’ experience in sales lead positions, in both the B2B market and the leisure industry, having managed major health clubs for brands like Fitness First and David Lloyd. Varri joined LAW in 2018 looking for a new challenge, and a company with great core value.
