HR staff at insurance giant Aviva were left red-faced recently when they accidentally fired the entire 1,300-strong workforce of their investment division in London.
The gaffe was caused when a rogue email, intended for one employee, was mistakenly fired out to the whole office. Staff were gobsmacked to read that they should hand in keys and passwords before exiting the building, and were curtly warned not to take any confidential info with them.
However, before widespread panic could set in, the mistake was spotted and the dismayed HR department sent another email clarifying that the first message was sent in error. One can only hope that staff had time to stop drafting their own (presumably less than impressed) farewell messages to the company when news of the mistake came through!
