Our sister company, Law At Work (IS) Ltd, is able to arrange insurance to protect clients against the costs of employment disputes.


With more than 70 kinds of complaint that can be made by aggrieved employees to an Employment Tribunal, the risks to employers of being caught up in costly and time-consuming employment disputes have risen dramatically over the last 30 years.

Typically, the costs of defending a tribunal case will exceed £4,000, and if the case is lost, the compensation awarded against the employer can range from relatively small amounts to more than £1m in exceptional cases.

While the £1m awards are few in number, and tend to be restricted to discrimination cases in the financial services sector in London, the average payouts have been steadily rising for many years.

At the same time, the numbers of claims submitted each year has been rising steadily and is now typically in excess of 100,000 per annum.

To limit the risks of being caught out by an unexpected tribunal claim, Law At Work clients can purchase Employment Practices Liability Insurance cover (EPLI), which will meet the full legal defence costs and any tribunal awards or settlements, provided that the employer has taken and followed Law At Work's advice from the outset of the dispute.

This EPLI cover is arranged by Law At Work (IS) Ltd, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority to act as a general insurance intermediary.
