Magnus Swanson
Chairman
Magnus is the former Chief Executive of a major corporate law firm. Before that he had an impressive track record in leverage mergers and acquisitions - particularly MBO and institutional buy-outs. He has served on the Board of Law At Work since the company was established, and is now Executive Chairman following our MBO in 2012.
Jane Wright - Law at Work
Jane Wright
Chief Executive
Jane is a highly experienced leader, with an outstanding track record. She began her working life in the public sector, followed by more than 20 years in the pharmaceutical and drinks industries, holding a variety of senior roles in both GSK and Diageo. Throughout her career, Jane has had significant interest in and experience of employee relations matters. In May 2010, Jane became Chief Executive of LAW. She is passionate about delivering high quality services and building strong client relationships.
Donald MacKinnon
Director of Legal Services
Donald’s 20 year career in law has included him working for a community law centre, a bank and one of Scotland’s largest commercial law firms. He joined LAW in 2001, and leads the employment law team. Accredited by the Law Society of Scotland since 2005 as a specialist in employment law, Donald has vast experience in all areas of employment practice. As well as being a board director, Donald maintains his own portfolio of clients, and continues to appear before employment tribunals and the EAT. Donald is a go-to contributor for press, radio and TV on all matters relating to employment law.
Sinead McIntosh
Assistant to CEO
Sinead joined the team in 2015 in the role of Assistant to the CEO. Prior to this she managed a retail boutique in the Highlands. Sinead’s role allows her to work closely in all areas of LAW business but she has a focus on training and marketing, allowing her to assist in the continued recognition of LAW as an industry leader in the professional services market. Sinead studied International Business at Glasgow Caledonian University which came in handy when she lived in Western Australia for a year and a half, working as an Executive Assistant in an international recruitment company.
Margaret Anne Clark
Head of Employment Law
Qualified since 2003, Margaret Anne is a highly skilled solicitor who gets the job done with a minimum of fuss. As Deputy Director of Legal Services, she advises clients on all aspects of employment law; with particular expertise in discrimination, equal pay and equality matters. She also has extensive experience of advising on redundancies, business reorganisations and TUPE. Her unwillingness to speak Latin, and her reluctance to write ten page letters, role models the pragmatic and practical approach that LAW exemplifies. Margaret Anne is also a tutor in the Diploma in Legal Practice at the University of Strathclyde.
Daniel Gorry
Deputy Head of Employment Law
After a spell flirting with the music industry and playing at T in the Park, Daniel traded in his guitar for a career in employment law with Law At Work. Since qualifying as a solicitor in 2006, Daniel has channelled his creative talents into advising clients on all aspects of employment law. Daniel has been on tour at a number of employment tribunals dealing with cases on unfair dismissal, discrimination and TUPE. From his involvement in complex company restructures, Daniel has developed an in depth knowledge of the education and leisure sectors.
Gerard O'Hare

Gerry completed an M.A. before setting off travelling to find his calling in life which turned out to be a love of photography. In order to fund this expensive hobby Gerry returned to university to study law and, following his traineeship, joined the LAW team in 2009. His people and analytical skills work well in the world of employment law, and Law At Work's innovative business model allows him to build strong relationships with his clients and provide them with high quality, practical, hands-on advice. Gerry specialises in reorganisations, workplace policies, contracts and contentious matters.
Sophie MacPhail - Law at Work
Sophie MacPhail
Employment Solicitor
Following the completion of an MA in history, Sophie took her keen interest of problem solving and analysing evidence to the study of law and completed her LLB at the University of Glasgow in 2009.  After spending some time travelling and working for a human rights charity, she returned to Scotland to undergo her legal traineeship at a national law firm in 2012, qualifying in 2014. Sophie joined LAW in 2016 having gained experience of working with a wide variety of clients including large corporations, small business, charities, housing associations and individuals. She has a keen interest in disciplinary issues, business re-organisations and absence management.
Fiona McBeath
Employment Solicitor
Following her first degree, and some business experience in London, Fiona returned to Scotland in 2006 to study Law at Glasgow University. Fiona enjoyed an eight month seat with LAW as part of her traineeship and built up strong relationships with our clients. Fiona returned to the team in 2011. With previous experience in civil litigation, Fiona has appeared in a number of Sheriff Court cases and has a particular interest in contentious matters. She also enjoys assisting clients with any tricky issues they may have regarding absence management, general disciplinary procedures and TUPE transfer queries.
Heather Kemmett
Employment Solicitor
Heather graduated from Strathclyde University where she gained a First Class Honours LLB degree and completed the Diploma in Legal Practice, also at Strathclyde. Never one to call a spade a shovel, Heather believes in getting right to the heart of the matter and advises in a practical, straightforward way. She has a particular interest in discipline management and business re-organisation, as well as grappling with contentious litigation on behalf of clients. While at University, Heather was involved in the University of Strathclyde Law Clinic, and continues to support their work.
Anita Mulholland
Employment Solicitor
Anita spent part of her LLB Law degree in The University of Maastricht in the Netherlands, studying International and Discrimination Law at honours level. She graduated from the University of Glasgow, having written her honours dissertation on the UK Trade Union movement. Anita’s desire to work in the realm of employment law sparked when she first volunteered as an adviser for the Citizen’s Advice Bureau during university. Anita joined the team as a trainee solicitor in 2013, and was retained as an employment lawyer in 2015.
Kirstie Beattie

Kirstie first became involved with Law At Work during the third year of her LLB, choosing ‘Shared Parental Leave’ as the topic of her Honours dissertation. She returned to LAW as a trainee solicitor after graduating with a first class honours and completing the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice. Kirstie possesses a keen interest in all aspects of employment law. Her background as a Volunteer Advisor with the Citizen’s Advice Bureau assists her greatly in providing clear-cut, practical advice to her clients at Law At Work on matters ranging from disciplinary and grievance procedure to family-friendly rights.

Andrew completed his LLB and Diploma in Legal Practice at the University of Strathclyde and followed this up with an MSc in International Public Policy. After spending a year working in local government, he chose to turn his focus to pursuing a career in employment law. Like some of his LAW colleagues, while at University Andrew volunteered at the Strathclyde Law Clinic and assisted many different clients with a variety of issues including employment law. Andrew’s relatable manner coupled with his knowledge and experience means that he’s able to advise companies at any level.
Laura Bremner - Law at Work
Laura Bremner
Trainee Employment Solicitor
While at University, Laura studied both Labour Law and Equality Law at Honours level, and gained the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice. Her dissertation focussed on the ‘clash of rights’ between religion and sexual orientation in the workplace, which reflects her specific interest in discrimination issues. Laura has experience being a Research Assistant and also volunteered with the Law Society as a Street Lawyer where she taught law and its real life application to secondary school pupils. Laura completed work experience in LAW’s Edinburgh office, and enjoyed it so much that she returned as a Trainee Solicitor in August 2016.
Paman Singh
Trainee Employment Solicitor
Following completion of his undergraduate degree alongside LAW’s Heather Kemmett, Paman worked with NGOs in London and New York, then decided to take the next logical step for a law graduate and become a builder. To keep his legal skills honed, he gained a Masters in Human Rights Law from Strathclyde University, which he combined with tutoring at the same institution. After establishing a small business and having dealt with employees at all levels, Paman felt the irresistible draw of law and completed his Diploma in Legal Practice. His experience enables him to appreciate the specific needs of a business.
Lorna Gemmell
EL & HR Training Manager
Lorna qualified in 2006 and joined LAW in 2014 from a large commercial law firm where she headed up the employment law training programme. As a highly experienced trainer and qualified employment lawyer, she delivers the best of both worlds – practical training backed up by a wealth of legal knowledge. Lorna enjoys learning about the nitty gritty of other industries, especially going on site visits to clients’ premises. Lorna is always looking for inspiration for content for training sessions so be careful of what you say to her as you may find the story re-hashed in a case study!
Roz Wood - Law at Work
Roz Wood
Head of HR Consultancy
Roz heads up the HR consultancy team at LAW. She has more than 30 years’ experience working as a generalist HR professional, including six years as HR Director for a large well-known London retail group. Roz has been responsible for managing the HR aspect of MBOs; company flotation on the stock market; new store openings; HR strategy; devising and implementing reward and remuneration strategies; changing management programmes; staff re-profiling; performance management and succession planning. Roz was a founding director of Square Circle HR where she was involved in all aspects of the business, giving her a keen insight for challenges facing companies today.
Christian Potter - Law at Work
Christian Potter
HR Operations Manager
Christian is a graduate of Psychology, with a Postgraduate Diploma in Personnel Management, and is a Chartered member of CIPD. She has more than 20 years’ experience in HR; most recently as a founding director of Square Circle HR. Her experience includes large corporates including BT, Scottish Power and National Australia Group, and has since worked with many SME clients across all sectors. Christian provides operational and strategic support to the HR At Work team. She has also lectured at Glasgow Caledonian University on HR at Undergraduate and MBA level.
Stephanie Harper

With 25 years of experience throughout the public, private and third sectors, Stephanie is a people management and governance expert. She has worked as a panel member for IIP Scotland; a Board member for a housing organisation; and an author for Personnel Today. Armed with a first degree in Psychology and a Masters in Law & Employment Relations, Stephanie is a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD and a trained mediator. Her experience includes large scale transformational changes; reorganisations; mergers & acquisitions; redundancies; employee engagement; talent management, reward strategies, early dispute resolution and HR business partnering.
Caroline Clements - Law at Work
Caroline Clements

Caroline is a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD and has over 20 years’ experience as a qualified HR and employment law expert. She has extensive experience from working as a recruitment consultant, through to specialist HR roles in organisations as diverse as retail, the BBC and Glasgow School of Art. She has also spent time working for a national HR and employment law provider. Her expertise includes the facilitated delivery of numerous change projects and large scale re-organisations including job evaluation and re-grading for a range of clients. Caroline enjoys working in close partnership with a diverse client base to provide commercially-focused strategic HR support.
Lilias Bennie - Law at Work

Lilias moved into consultancy after 20 years working in HR managerial roles in the private sector, including several years in senior HR at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre. She’s a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD and has a paralegal qualification in employment law from the University of Strathclyde, which means she’s ideally placed to handle complex employment relations issues. Lilias enjoys the diverse range of activities working in a consultancy; some of her projects have included recruitment and retention; training & development; coaching; policy development and harmonising terms and conditions of employment.

With more than 25 years of experience in employment law and HR consultancy, and with a passion for employee relations, Mary has a wealth of expertise across many industry sectors, including insurance and banking. She graduated from Glasgow Caledonian University with a PgDip in HR Management and she is a Chartered Member of CIPD. Mary takes a strategic approach to provide solutions; her recent projects include recruitment; employment documentation; job evaluation; managing performance; restructuring; redundancy, disciplinary, grievance, conflict resolution; absence management, pay benchmarking; management training and coaching.
Katy Marshall

Katy joined LAW in 2007 with an LLB from Glasgow University, a background in management and a keen interest in HR and employment law matters. She worked initially in our legal team, managing a portfolio of clients, including appearing in the employment tribunal. With her considerable experience, Katy moved to our HR consultancy team in 2015. She delivers a mix of projects including large scale reorganisations and redundancies, collective consultations and TUPE transfers; support with grievance and disciplinary investigations; designing formal performance management systems; high profile executive recruitment campaigns; job evaluation; pay benchmarking and equal pay reviews.
Douglas Cameron - Law at Work

Douglas started his career as an Environmental Health Officer enforcing food and safety legislation. He then joined the Health and Safety Executive, as the first EHO seconded for his expertise in the catering and food manufacturing industries. After leaving HSE, Douglas worked large FTSE companies as Head of Safety both in the UK and internationally including care homes, hotels, student accommodation, events, logistics, distribution, retail and leisure. A Chartered Member of IOSH, he specialises in auditing, creating best work practices, client specific project work, training and coaching for workplace safety, fire prevention, food safety, security and environmental management. Douglas joined LAW as Head of Health & Safety in 2015.

Lee worked in local government in the Civil Contingency Planning field before moving into health and safety in 2003. In her safety role, she was responsible for developing, implementing and delivering health and safety policies - including consultation with trade union representatives. Lee moved to consultancy in 2012, where she supported a portfolio of clients in retail, care, warehousing, hospitality and leisure. A Chartered Member of IOSH with a PgC in Safety and Risk Management, she has a wealth of experience including crisis management and business continuity; corporate risk management; construction, work related stress, lone working; violence at work and asbestos management.
David McCabe - Law at Work
David McCabe
Health & Safety Manager
A Chartered Member of IOSH, with ten years' experience in offshore oil and gas as an HSEQ Advisor and a Lead EHS Specialist, David joined LAW in 2016. David has a BA in Occupational Health & Safety Management, and he’s also a qualified senior accident investigator - having specialised in safety within hazardous operations - and has experience of co-ordinating major emergencies. In addition, David also has experience in construction, shipbuilding and heavy industry - meaning he’s ideally placed to analyse potential hazards, the associated risks and consequences in a vast range of workplace environments.
Matthew Ramsey
Health & Safety Manager
Matthew joined LAW in 2016, after eight years as an inspector with the Health and Safety Executive in Scotland. Given his broad remit within the HSE, Matthew has a breadth and depth of experience across most industries and situations, including construction and the control of major accident hazards. Matthew was attracted to LAW’s proactive and supportive approach to health & safety, and the quality of our service compared to off the shelf solutions which he experienced during his time with the HSE. He brings valuable enforcement insight to our clients and the LAW team.
Steven A Smith
Head of Client Management
Steven has a joint honours degree in marketing and economics from Strathclyde Business School. He completed his degree at Arizona State University in Phoenix, where he worked with a range of global brands and marketing agencies. He joined LAW in 2010. Steven has a wide operational role within the business. Reporting to the Chief Executive, he manages all areas of our client care, marketing and retention. In 2013, intrigued by the work of our lawyers, Steven returned to the books to take on a Masters in Employment Law at Robert Gordon University.

Zoe joined the LAW team in 2016 looking for a new challenge. She completed her honours degree in Costume Design and Construction in 2010, during which she delighted in the amazing world of theatre and the world behind the curtain. After graduation, a move into high-end retail gained her valuable management experience and insight into the rigorous demands of excellent customer service. Zoe works closely with our service delivery team to continually enhance our service, and is a key point of contact for all of our clients.

Alison is a Chartered Member of CIPD and has more than 25 years’ experience at a senior HR level, most recently as founding director of Square Circle HR. Alison has a joint degree in Business and Psychology, a PgDip in Personnel Management, and is a Paralegal in Employment Law. Her career has seen her managing teams in Europe and South East Asia, gaining significant experience in mergers and acquisition activity, the integration of different business cultures, and business reorganisation/restructure. Alison works with prospective clients to understand their requirements in HR and uses her experience to develop specific solutions.

Suzanne joined LAW in early 2016 when she moved back home to Scotland, having lived in England for 20 years. With a strong background in sales and customer relations, she’s worked for a variety of different businesses – from hospitality and leisure venues, to insurance providers and global brands such as Coca-Cola. Her experience has given her an expert insight into how different companies are run and organised. Suzanne has a real passion for the LAW approach and enjoys engaging with businesses to explore their needs.

Prior to joining LAW in 2016, Edward graduated from the University of Kent with a degree in Military History BA (Hons). Taking a step away from the past he looked to the future and moved to Scotland before joining a large law firm where he managed the admin team in Edinburgh for two years. At LAW, Ed works closely with senior management and the business development team to coordinate our new business activity, ensure the smooth running of our training and events programme, and maintain our social media presence.
